OH GAWD, where do I start????? Can I just first say that… THIS IS IT!?
*insert Ai Ai de las Alas voice in Tanging Ina*
I am so excited for this tour and for more readers to be able to read this book I want to cry!!! Because finally, folks. I am officially opening the sign-ups for the blog tour of my latest favorite fantasy novel, The Sword of Kaigen by M.L. Wang!
Now, you will be reading the synopsis of this book at the middle of this post. However, I feel like the synopsis is not actually enough to tell you what is going on in this book and what you should expect. So, allow me to tell you more (and convince you on why you should pick up The Sword of Kaigen).
The Sword of Kaigen is an adult Japanese-inspired military fantasy book with two main characters – a mother, Misaki, and her son, Mamoru and is set in an alternative history with reversed racial hierarchy where African powers colonized most of the world.
This is perfect for fans of The Poppy War and The Last Airbender, as J.C. Kang’s blurb says. Why? Some of the plot points in The Sword of Kaigen were based on the Nanjing Massacre and M.L. Wang’s own family’s experience in it. Similarly with The Poppy War, both books has influences from the Second Sino-Japanese War and both books are war stories. (Although it was just a coincidence and the author didn’t intentionally followed suit.) So expect lots of blood, tears and sorrow. As for The Last Airbender, the main characters are called jijakalu (theonites that can control water), then theonites from other countries can control fire, air, light, and more. So expect lots of exhibitions. 😉
However, this is not written by an Own Voices author because the author is Chinese-American. Now, this is where this book becomes more interesting. The main characters in this book and where they live, which is Kaigen, are Japanese-inspired while its enemy country, Ranga, is Chinese-inspired, then another powerful country, Yamma, is African-inspired. Why does this part makes it more interesting for me? I talked with the author about this and this is what she said, “I built this world in order to get people of different backgrounds to walk a mile in someone else’s shoes and to examine the bare mechanisms by which one culture forces itself over another.” In other words, this was written with the intention for the author herself as well as her readers, to help put ourselves in the shoes of others.
To know more about the world you’ll be entering in The Sword of Kaigen, you can read this awesome interview (also because I know I’m already talking too much and you’re prolly tired of me already) of M.L. Wang at Novel Notions here.
Now, do I have your attention? Are you interested in this blog tour? Yes? Then, carry on!

Publishing Date: October 1st 2019
Age Category & Genre: Adult High Fantasy
Synopsis: A mother struggling to repress her violent past,

When the winds of war reach their peninsula, will the Matsuda family have the strength to defend their empire? Or will they tear each other apart before the true enemies even reach their shores?
High on a mountainside at the edge of the Kaigenese Empire live the most powerful warriors in the world, superhumans capable of raising the sea and wielding blades of ice. For hundreds of years, the fighters of the Kusanagi Peninsula have held the Empire’s enemies at bay, earning their frozen spit of land the name ‘The Sword of Kaigen.’
Born into Kusanagi’s legendary Matsuda family, fourteen-year-old Mamoru has always known his purpose: to master his family’s fighting techniques and defend his homeland. But when an outsider arrives and pulls back the curtain on Kaigen’s alleged age of peace, Mamoru realizes that he might not have much time to become the fighter he was bred to be. Worse, the empire he was bred to defend may stand on a foundation of lies.
Misaki told herself that she left the passions of her youth behind when she married into the Matsuda house. Determined to be a good housewife and mother, she hid away her sword, along with everything from her days as a fighter in a faraway country. But with her growing son asking questions about the outside world, the threat of an impending invasion looming across the sea, and her frigid husband grating on her nerves, Misaki finds the fighter in her clawing its way back to the surface.
